Unitronics Vision vs. UniStream vs. Samba vs. Jazz: Which PLC + HMI Is Right for You?
Unitronics builds its controllers around one idea: put the PLC and the operator panel in a single unit. That saves panel space, wiring, and a second software package. But Unitronics offers several controller families, and choosing between them is the first question most customers ask us. Here is how we explain the differences.
UniStream: the flagship platform
UniStream is Unitronics' most capable line. It is programmed with UniLogic, Unitronics' free all-in-one software for PLC logic, HMI screens, communications, and data. UniStream panels come in several screen sizes, from 5" up to 15.6", and are offered in different feature levels (such as Standard and Pro) so you only pay for what the application needs.
I/O is flexible. Some models have I/O built into the controller (for example, the US5-B5-TR22), while others accept uni-I/O modules that snap onto the back of the panel. Additional local or remote expansion is also available. A screenless UniStream controller (USC series) is available when the HMI lives elsewhere.
Choose UniStream when: you are designing a new machine, need larger or higher-resolution screens, want advanced communications and data features, or expect the machine to grow.
Vision: the proven workhorse
The Vision series has been installed on machines worldwide for many years. It is programmed with VisiLogic, also free from Unitronics. Vision panels range from compact models with keypads to large color touchscreens such as the V700, V1040, and V1210. I/O can be added with snap-in modules (the V200-18 series) that mount directly on the back of the controller, plus expansion modules.
Choose Vision when: you are replacing or expanding an existing Vision machine, your team already knows VisiLogic, or you want to reuse an existing program.
Samba: compact color touchscreen, built-in I/O
Samba controllers pair a small color touchscreen (3.5", 4.3", or 7") with built-in I/O in one compact, cost-effective unit. Samba is also programmed in VisiLogic.
Choose Samba when: the machine is small, the I/O count is modest, and you want a color touchscreen at a lower price point.
Jazz: micro-PLC with a text display
Jazz units are micro-PLCs with a built-in text display and keypad. They are a good fit for simple control tasks where the operator only needs to view values and change a few settings.
Choose Jazz when: the application is simple, space is tight, and a graphical touchscreen is not needed.
